The Vietnamese language is the official language of Vietnam. it's the primary or second language of the many ethnic minorities in Vietnam, but some mountain tribes also speak a language of their own.
Vietnamese is among the 20 most spoken languages within the world, spoken by around 80 million people worldwide. It belongs to the Austro-Asiatic family and has had many Chinese, also as French, influences. It won’t be written with Chinese letters, but nowadays it's written with the Roman alphabet and uses diacritics for the tone and a few additional vowels. The letters F, J, W and Z are used only to precise foreign words.
There are three main dialects of Vietnamese which will be classified geographically: north (Hanoi), south (Ho-Chi-Minh-City), central (Hue).
Vietnamese a monosyllabic language that uses variations of pitch, called ‘tones’, to differentiate between several meanings of an equivalent word. There are five tones, identified within the written form by tone markers. To complicate things further, aside from those familiar to English-speakers, there are a further six vowels identified within the written form by diacritics, three diphthongs and ten consonant clusters, each with a special pronunciation.
