Halo

Bahasa Indonesia is the official language of Indonesia. Indonesia is the 4th most populated country in the world which makes it one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Bahasa Indonesia is the standardised variety of Malay, an Austronesian language which has been used as a lingua franca for centuries in the multilingual Indonesian archipelago.

It is spoken by 200 million people within the modern states of Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. It’s also a crucial vernacular within the southern provinces of Thailand, in East Timor and among the Malay people of Australia’s Cocos Keeling Islands within the Indian Ocean. It’s understood in parts of the Sulu area of the southern Philippines and traces of it are to be found among people of Malay descent in Sri Lanka, South Africa and other places.

Malay is simply one among many, perhaps hundreds, of various languages within the area now occupied by the Republic of Indonesia. In the Indonesian nationalist movement, people chose it because of the future nation’s national language. Its name was changed to Indonesian, literally: “the language (Bahasa) of Indonesia”. In English however, we call the language “Indonesian”: it's not correct to call it simply “Bahasa”.

It is the official language of Indonesia. Most Indonesians speak this although there are over 700 languages colloquial languages in Indonesia. The Indonesian language has an extremely important role in the Republic of Indonesia, where it serves as the official national language and acts as a unifying force, a common tool of communication in a country where hundreds of languages exist.

Some Fascinating Facts About Bahasa Indonesia

Someone could make a conversational sentence just by using the root words. For example: “kamu dari mana?” (Where do you come from?”), “saya tinggal di sini” (I live in here”), etc.

One word that is always used to conjugate sentence, especially while making an explanation, is “yang”. For example: nelayan = orang yang kerja cari ikan. (Fisherman = people that go fishing). By the way, see that by only using the root words in Bahasa Indonesia, the most Indonesian people easily understand the sentence. It’s used in the informal style.

There are three prepositions that are always used in everyday conversation. Those are “di”, “ke”, “dari” to show “place”, “location”, “time”, or “day”. Pay attention to the difference between those prepositions with prefix “di-”. Officially the preposition is written separately with other words, whereas prefix “di-” is connected to the root words. For example: “di pasar” (at the market); “ke pasar” (to the market); “dari pasar” (from the market). “di pagi hari” (in the morning); “dari hari ke hari” (from day to day). Prefix “di-” → di- + makan = dimakan; di- + minum = diminum.

Some non-native speakers might find it difficult to use affixational words because they have to insert some kind of sounds like ‘m’, ‘ng’, ‘n’, ‘ny’, to the root words.
