What is the TELC Exam? (Qu'est-ce que l'examen TELC?)

The TELC (The European Language Certificates) is an internationally recognized European language test. It allows candidates to test their linguistic skills in 11 languages, and various governments and organizations recognize this certificate. The European Language Certificates are based on the provisions of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The TELC French Test certifies the candidate’s competence in the French language for study, work, and professional training. It is one of the most prestigious certificates in Europe. Based on the level of proficiency, different age groups and people can take a TELC French test.

TELC French Examination Structure (Structure de l'examen de français TELC)


Telc Français A1

The TELC A1 French Exam assesses your beginner-level French skills in reading, listening, writing, and speaking. This certificate shows your ability to communicate effectively in everyday situations.

The examination consists of a written and an oral part. Test-takers must complete tasks that involve all skills. The first part consists of reading, listening, and language elements, with task types including multiple-choice questions and matching tasks. In the writing and speaking section, test-takers are given a variety of prompts (e.g., pictures) and must respond, expressing themselves either in writing or orally. The test-taker interacts with both a partner and the examiner in the oral section.

This examination is available in paper-based format. It can NOT be taken as a partial examination.

Telc Français B1

The TELC B1 French Exam demonstrates your knowledge of the basics of French reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and your ability to communicate in everyday situations, both personal and professional.

The Telc B1 qualification consists of a written and an oral examination. The test presents test takers with tasks that evaluate a range of skills. The reading, listening, and language elements sections test receptive skills using tasks such as multiple-choice questions or text matching.  Productive skills are evaluated in writing and speaking tasks. Here, test takers respond to some form of input, such as questions or images, in written or spoken form.


This exam can be taken in a computer or paper-based format.

Telc Français B2

The TELC B2 French Exam demonstrates that you have French language skills in reading, listening, writing, and speaking at level B2, as well as everyday communication skills.

The Telc B2 consists of a written and an oral examination. Test takers complete tasks using both receptive and productive skills. Receptive skills are assessed through reading and listening comprehension tasks, as well as a section on language elements. Tasks include multiple-choice or text-matching. Productive skills are evaluated in written and oral tasks. Here, test takers are presented with specific input, which they respond to in written or spoken form. Vocabulary and topics focus on everyday situations.


This examination is available in hybrid and paper-based formats. It can be taken as a partial examination.

TELC French Test Scoring and Passing Criteria (Critères de notation et de réussite du test de français TELC)


The TELC French Exam has a total score of 300 points. The written test is of 225 points, and the oral examination is of 75 points. To pass the TELC French test, you need at least 60% in the written and oral sections, i.e., at least 135 points in writing and 45 points in speaking.
